Teaching maths in schools is hard. It is impossible to prepare a lesson which perfectly meets the needs of an entire class. Generally, lessons are pitched towards those students whose attainment is in the middle, which means that students who could tackle more challenging content are held back. Meanwhile, lower-attaining students who would have benefitted from revisiting something taught in a previous year can find their typical maths lessons overwhelming as the content is too difficult. There is little scope for a classroom teacher to spend time working with a child on a one-to-one basis in regular lessons. Ask a primary school teacher what it is like to teach time or multiplication to a class and you will see what I mean. For example, in a typical Year 5 class, you may have children who cannot tell the time at all who are working on the same table as a child who can: read digital and analogue clocks, convert between 12 and 24-hour clocks, read from timetables and calculate time intervals. Likewise, you may have some children who would find 2 x 7 difficult alongside others who could calculate 366 x 5 in their heads.

Being successful in maths is crucial. It is a subject used in everyday life and almost every workplace. As a tutor, I can provide a personalised approach which is wholly tailored to your child. I can identify gaps in your child’s understanding and address these. If you feel your child is coasting or your child feels unchallenged by their maths lessons at school, I can accelerate their progress and help them to develop a deep and advanced understanding of the subject.
